A place called home - apch
A Place Called Home is a great non-profit organization that makes a huge impact on underserved children in South Central Los Angeles. It's an after-school place where the kids can get help with their homework, eat a warm meal, play music, participate in an art or dance class and in many other activities. I volunteered about 40 hours helping with homework, tutoring and in the kitchen.
nutrition workshops
I had a great opportunity to lead a 2-day nutrition workshop for 40 workers of Aaron's stores in Indio and Cathedral City. The audience was mostly Latino, in their 20's, 30's and early 40's and I focused on a healthy balanced diet and diabetes prevention. I provided them with a healthy breakfast (fruit, cereal and yogurt) and lunch (brown rice fiesta salad) just to show them that eating healthy can taste good and save them money. The response was great! I realized that people crave the information and they are often lost in misinformation from the media. My enthusiasm for nutrition is definitely contagious:)
Downtown Women's center
Another place where I had one of the most amazing volunteering experiences was the Downtown Women's Center. It's a place on skid row in Los Angeles where homeless women can get everything they need during the day: from showers, food and clothes to medical appointments, blood glucose monitors and many useful workshops and classes. At that time I was volunteering in the kitchen, serving breakfast and helping with lunch preparation. As a part of the On-The-Move program to prevent obesity and diabetes in homeless women they needed a nutrition counselor. I stepped up and became a one-on-one nutrition counselor. I taught the ladies about food journals, better fast food choices and managing their lives around diabetes. I met many great women, heard a lot of amazing stories and learned about the life of a homeless person. It's not how we are often led to believe. I don't judge a homeless person anymore without hearing their story first.
Certified personal trainer
I've always had passion for helping people. I'm an ISSA certified personal trainer and I find it very rewarding. It's not just a job, it's a lifelong personal relationship with my clients, their families and their struggles. I'm always there when they need me, whether it's an emergency night run, or their need for quick motivation. My clients look up to me and that keeps me in check to be a good role model for the lifestyle I'm promoting. "I have been training with Julia for the past 3 months now and what separates her from any other trainer other than her mad skills in fitness, is how much she genuinely cares about her clients. Over the past 3 months, Julia has been my trainer and my friend and has cheered me on in my fitness achievements. Previous to Julia my workout experience had not been every effective and I found myself doing the same old thing without any drive and results. Julia brings a tremendous amount of enthusiasm, energy and experience to the workouts...". Jeannie A.

I teach federally funded nutrition and fitness Bodyworks classes that are designed to help families learn how to live healthier lifestyles. It's a 7 week program, where we teach the parents and the kids important topics in nutrition and physical activity.
clinical trial coordinator
It was a very exciting experience to be a part of this pilot study on feasibility, safety and the effects on cognitive and immune functions in humans. Professor Valter Longo is a very well known gerontology researcher and primary investigator. According to his hypotheses calorie restriction is associated with longevity and lower rates of spontaneous cancer formation. In the previous studies on mice, short-term starvation significantly reduced the toxicity of chemotherapy and increased its effectiveness with little harm to the body. In our studies, we test that hypotheses on humans. Phase I focused on healthy individuals to evaluate the similarity in physiological response to fasting. I worked on this trial as a Clinical Trials Coordinator and it made me realize that food is not the only cure to a disease, but controlled fasting works just as well if not better. Nutrition is always evolving and we should stay open minded for a new research! Update: Prolon is finally out and available for everyone to try. The 1st fasting mimicking diet to help you decrease body fat, improve fasting blood glucose, Blood pressure, cholesterol, boost stem cells production and lower inflammation!
